Fungal Nails Q&A

What are fungal nails?

Fungal nails are a common problem because toenail fungus spreads so easily. The fungus loves dark, damp, warm conditions, so public gyms, showers, and pools are ideal for it. The fungus also thrives in shoes, which fulfill its requirements perfectly.

The fungus attacks your cuticle at the bottom of the nail. The infection spreads, gradually making the nail thicker and discolored white or yellow. Some people get very thick fungal nails that rub against their shoes. Eventually, the nail starts to weaken and crumble. Fungal nails can also be painful.

People with lowered immunity are more likely to get fungal nails. The infection can be a significant problem if you have diabetes or cancer.

How are fungal nails treated?

Various creams and topical medications that claim to get rid of the fungus are available over the counter, but they may have limited effectiveness.  Typically, to return the nails to normal appearance, nail removal, topical and Oral medications are required.  Dr. Hall will discuss with you the options and together decide on the best course of treatment for each individual.

How do I protect my feet from fungal nail infections?

Protecting yourself from infection is the best way to avoid needing fungal nail treatment. First, keeping your feet clean and dry throughout the day is essential. If your feet get very sweaty, carry an extra pair of socks to put on if needed. You should also allow your footwear to dry out for at least 12 hours before wearing them again.

Protect your feet with shower shoes or flip-flops if you go to places like the gym or a public pool where the fungus lives. If you have a cut, cover it so the fungus can’t access your nail.

Fungal toenails are embarrassing and sometimes painful, but Mill Creek Foot & Ankle Clinic can help treat the infection and resolve your problems. Call the office to learn more about fungal nail treatments, or book an appointment online today.
